Did you know that Mary Had a Little Lamb was published in America in 1830 by Sarah Josepha Hale, and was based on an actual incident. Apparently, there was a little girl, Mary Sawyer, who brought her pet lamb to school one day. Of course, this resulted in a commotion at school. A young man who was visiting the school that day was so amused by the whole incident that he actually wrote up a short poem and handed it to Mary the next day.
